Spray Dryer

Spray drying is a method of producing dry powder from a liquid or slurry by rapidly drying the feed with hot gas (generally air).A typical spray dryer consist of a drying chamber which is just like the cyclone separator. It ensures the good circulation of air to facilitate heat and mass transfer and also ensures the separation of dried particles by the centrifugal action.

Principle :

  • In the spray dryer the fluid isatomizedin form of fine droplets, which are thrown radially in to a moving stream of hot gas.
  • The temperature of the droplets is immediately increased and instantaneouslyfine droplets get dried in the form of spherical particles.

Applications :

Spray dryer can be used in a wide range of applications where the production of a dried powder is required. This method of dehydration has become the most successful in the following areas:

  • Pharmaceuticals
  • Beverages
  • Milk and egg products
  • Soaps and detergents
  • Textiles
  • Plastics, polymers and resins
  • Flavours, colorings and plant extracts

Spray Drying  Consists Of The Following Phases :

  • Feed preparation
  • Atomization
  • Drying
  • Separation of powder from moist gas
