At MKS Industrial Solutions, we design and deliver advanced ZLD (Zero Liquid Discharge) plants to help industries tackle wastewater challenges. Our solutions not only meet strict environmental regulations but also conserve water and reduce waste, ensuring efficient and sustainable operations.

What is Zero Liquid Discharge (ZLD)?

Zero Liquid Discharge (ZLD) is a wastewater management strategy designed to eliminate liquid waste discharge from a system that ensures all wastewater is treated and recycled, leaving behind only solid residues.

ZLD is ideal for industries facing water scarcity or strict environmental rules.

How Zero Liquid Discharge (ZLD) Plants Work?

A ZLD plant works in a comprehensive approach equipped with ZLD systems to treat industrial effluents using various technologies to maximize the water reuse and minimize the liquid discharge into the environment by recovering valuable byproducts to meet the stringent environmental regulations.

The flow diagram of the ZLD system is as follows:

Key features:

The ZLD plant works in a closed-loop water system using various processes to separate solids from the liquid effluent. The ZLD plant process is mainly divided into several stages which include pre-treatment, evaporation, crystallization and solid waste management.

  1. Pre-treatment : Initial filtration, sedimentation and chemical treatment to remove large particles and adjust pH levels. The amount of Total suspended solids (TSS), chemical oxygen demand(COD) and turbidity will be reduced during this process. This process removes the hardness of organic and in-organic matter present in the water.
  2. Concentration / Evaporation: Thermal evaporation or mechanical compression is used to reduce the waste in the liquid water.
  3. Crystallization: The water is further evaporated to solidify the dissolved salts and minerals leaving distilled water.
  4. Solid Waste management: The solid residue left is carefully disposed off and the valuable products are reused in industrial applications.

This ZLD process ensures no liquid waste leaves the facility.

Benefits of ZLD :

  1. This approach reduces the need for freshwater intake and minimizes wastewater discharge.
  2. It is a critical component in sustainable water management practices.
  3. ZLD helps in  protecting the environment by reducing the pollution levels and conserving water resources.
  4. This process helps industries to meet environmental compliance and long term savings in water procurement and solid waste disposal.

Applications of ZLD Plants

Our ZLD plants are used in a wide range of industries, including:

  • Textiles: Treating dye and finishing wastewater.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

  • What are the chemicals present in the solid residue in the ZLD process?

The Zero Liquid Discharge (ZLD) process produces solid products like sodium chloride (NaCl), magnesium hydroxide (Mg(OH)2), and bromine (Br2) from wastewater or brine. The solids can be crystalline salts like NaCl and Na2SO4, which can be sold for further processing.

  • What are the steps in the ZLD process?

The main steps involved in the ZLD process are Pretreatment, evaporation, crystallization and solid disposal.

  •  What industries benefit the most from ZLD plants?

Industries like textiles, pharmaceuticals, automobiles, chemicals, food & beverages, and pulp & paper benefit significantly from ZLD technology.

  • Difference between ETP and ZLD?

Effluent treatment plant (ETP) and zero liquid discharge (ZLD) both are wastewater treatment plants with different purposes

  • Do you offer other wastewater treatment solutions?

Yes, we provide ETP Plants, Industrial RO Plants, and Sewage Treatment Plants for comprehensive wastewater management.
